Minnesota Orchestra trumpeter, Charles Lazarus, and former Prince keyboardist, Tommy Barbarella, return to JOYA with their high-powered 5 member band. Anoka native, soprano Ellie Dehn, will join founder and artistic director of JOYA, pianist Mary Jo Gothmann, for a selection of fan-favorite arias and art songs. Ms. Dehn has sung with world-renowned orchestras and opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Teatro alla Scala, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, San Diego Opera, and Santa Fe Opera. She has also performed on Garrison Keillor’s radio show A Prairie Home Companion. Outside of performing, Ms. Dehn is a devoted mother to her 6-year-old daughter, Arabella.
The second half of the concert will feature Minnesota Orchestra trumpeter, Charles Lazarus, and former Prince keyboardist, Tommy Barbarella, performing featured selections from their newest release, The Modern Hymn Project. The two have been playing music together for many years and each enjoy highly successful careers in their own right. Mr. Lazarus enjoys a varied career that has included tenures with Dallas Brass, Meridian Arts Ensemble, and Canadian Brass. He has also performed with major orchestras throughout the world, including the New York Philharmonic Principal Brass, Empire Brass, and London Brass. Opening for American jazz singer, Tony Bennett, is a highlight of Mr. Lazarus’s career. Mr. Barbarella is best known for being a member of Prince’s band, The New Power Generation, from 1991 to 1996. He regularly performs with the Minnesota Orchestra and is an accomplished composer and arranger of music. In September of 2016, Mr. Barbarella’s worlds collided when the Minnesota Orchestra performed his arrangement of Prince’s “Purple Rain” at the halftime show of the Minnesota Viking’s inaugural game at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Uptown Brass will present an eclectic, entertaining, and virtuosic program featuring songs of joy from around the world inspired by dance rhythms of many cultures. The program will include the music of Bernstein, Piazzolla, and Paquito D’ Rivera as well as American spirituals, brand new works by award winning composer Jack Stamp, and holiday favorites.

Violinist James Garlick and cellist Scott Lykins join forces with pianist Mary Jo Gothmann for this season closing program of piano trios. Featured on this program is a trio by Brahms and a set of pieces from “Paul Klee: Painted Songs” by local composer Jonathan Posthuma which will include projections fo specific paintings accompanied by the music.
Charles Lazarus and Douglas Wright, star trumpet and trombone players of the Minnesota Orchestra along with pianist/organist Mary Jo Gothmann. This program will feature these two incredible and versatile brass players in a wide variety of music!
Minnesota Orchestra Music Director Osmo Vänskä and Concertmaster Erin Keefe return to Joya for a varied concert of music for clarinet, violin and piano. This special program will include music of Sibelius, Beethoven, Schubert, Arutiunian, Minnesota composer Eric King, and an original piece by Osmo. This is a rare opportunity to hear this husband/wife duo playing wonderful chamber music.
Anthony Ross, Principal Cellist of the Minnesota Orchestra and Joya favorite returns for an afternoon of cello and piano music including Mendelssohn’s Sonata in D major, White Tulips by Minnesota composer Steven Heitzeg, Variations on a Theme of Rossini by Martinu and more. Pianist and Joya founder and artistic director, Mary Jo Gothmann will join Anthony for this beautiful program.
One piano, four hands, featuring pianists Timothy Lovelace and Mary Jo Gothmann. Playing piano duets was a primary source of home entertainment in the 18th and 19th centuries resulting in a wealth of wonderful repertoire.
You won’t want to miss this program of rarely heard works by Beethoven, Barber, Dvorak, and Poulenc.
Mothers and Daughters, a FREE concert, will feature Minnesota Orchestra violinist Cathy Schubilske and her daughter Clara. Clara is a violin performance major at Northwestern University in Chicago and will be a junior this fall. Joining Cathy and Clara will be Mary Jo Gothmann on piano and her daughter cellist, Amelia Podolny. Amelia will be starting her freshman year at St. Olaf this fall. The program will include the Sonata for Violin and Piano by Richard Strauss, Tzigane by Ravel, the first movement of the Elgar Cello Concerto and more!

Ending the season will be a May 12, Mother's Day, two piano spectacular featuring Mary Jo Gothmann and her good friend, New York based pianist, Howard Watkins.
This concert will feature music for piano quintet by Polish composer Bacewicz and a stunning piece for piano quintet and tenor by Ralph Vaughan Williams. The Vaughn Williams will be performed by local rising star tenor, David Walton and musicians from the Minnesota Orchestra.
Start your Superbowl Sunday festivities off with a Pre Superbowl Party, Charles Lazarus and his band will be playing music from their album “LoveJoy”.
